--- title: "Delfield E02: the coil sensor is defective" description: "What E02 means on Delfield E02: the coil sensor is defectives, what to check before booking, and when it is not a failure at all." url: "https://commercialappliancerepair.center/error-codes/delfield-e02/" --- # Delfield E02: the coil sensor is defective Sensor 2 on Delfield's control reads the evaporator coil. ## What E02 actually means. Sensor 2 on Delfield's control reads the evaporator coil. The control uses it to end defrost and to hold the evaporator fans after defrost on low-temperature units. With E02 showing, defrost is no longer ended by coil temperature, and ice can build. Delfield commercial appliance display What to do when E02 shows on the commercial appliance ### Kind of code Sensors and probes A probe is handing the controller a reading it cannot trust, or none at all: a box or coil sensor torn loose from its clip, a fryer probe coated in carbon from oil left too long between filterings, a combi core probe with a kinked cable, or a connector gone green from steam and cleaning chemicals. The unit then runs on, stops, or shuts the heat or the cooling off to protect itself. Letting it cool and restarting it as the manual describes is fair; a probe that still reads wrong sits behind a panel, and that is a visit. ### Usually leads to Commercial controls and board repair Controllers, touch panels, relays, contactors and interlocks tested, and replaced only when the evidence says so. ### Shows up as Commercial Appliance Error Code on a Combi, Fryer, Dish Machine or Laundry Display A commercial appliance error code appears as letters or numbers on a combi, fryer, reach-in controller, dish machine or laundry machine display, or as a flashing light or an alarm tone. ### Make Delfield For a Delfield station that runs warm by late lunch, we time the visit to a slow hour so the pans can come out and the rail can be tested empty. ### Source Delfield 6000XL and 6100XL Series reach-ins, installation, operation and maintenance manual, part 9294254 (archived copy of the delfield.com PDF) Listed in the operation and indication table of Delfield's R290 reach-in manual (6000XL/6100XL) and prep table manual (4400/4500 Series). ## Before you book, in this order. Each step comes from Delfield's own guidance for E02 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit. 01 Keep logging food temperatures. 02 Watch for frost building up behind the evaporator cover. 03 Book a visit before ice blocks the airflow. ### Still there? Keep logging food temperatures. If it comes back, it needs a visit. ### Why is my Delfield icing up with E02? Without the coil sensor the control cannot tell when defrost has finished, so ice can remain after each cycle. ### Is E02 on a Delfield urgent? Less urgent than E01, but it becomes a warm-cabinet problem once the coil ices over. ### What are E03 and E04 on a Delfield? Delfield's table lists sensors 3 and 4 as open inputs, so on these units they should not normally appear. --- **[Read on the site: Delfield E02: the coil sensor is defective](https://commercialappliancerepair.center/error-codes/delfield-e02/)** **[Book a visit with CommercialApplianceRepair.center](https://commercialappliancerepair.center/schedule/)**
