--- title: "Pitco Prob: the digital control has lost the probe signal" description: "What Prob means on Pitco Prob: the digital control has lost the probe signals, what to check before booking, and when it is not a failure at all." url: "https://commercialappliancerepair.center/error-codes/pitco-prob/" --- # Pitco Prob: the digital control has lost the probe signal The Digital Solid State Control has a short display, so it abbreviates. ## What Prob actually means. The Digital Solid State Control has a short display, so it abbreviates. When it cannot see the probe at all, it shows Prob, and Pitco's service manual sends the technician to test the probe and then the wiring and connectors back to the control for continuity. Pitco commercial appliance display What to do when Prob shows on the commercial appliance ### Kind of code Sensors and probes A probe is handing the controller a reading it cannot trust, or none at all: a box or coil sensor torn loose from its clip, a fryer probe coated in carbon from oil left too long between filterings, a combi core probe with a kinked cable, or a connector gone green from steam and cleaning chemicals. The unit then runs on, stops, or shuts the heat or the cooling off to protect itself. Letting it cool and restarting it as the manual describes is fair; a probe that still reads wrong sits behind a panel, and that is a visit. ### Usually leads to Commercial controls and board repair Controllers, touch panels, relays, contactors and interlocks tested, and replaced only when the evidence says so. ### Shows up as Commercial Appliance Error Code on a Combi, Fryer, Dish Machine or Laundry Display A commercial appliance error code appears as letters or numbers on a combi, fryer, reach-in controller, dish machine or laundry machine display, or as a flashing light or an alarm tone. ### Make Pitco A Pitco visit begins only once the vat is cool enough to drain, since nobody on the crew should be reaching near hot oil. ### Source Pitco Solstice and Solstice Supreme SG/SSH series gas fryer service manual (L22-345 R1) Pitco Digital Solid State Control on Solstice and Solstice Supreme gas fryers; the computer control shows the same condition as PROBE OPEN. ## Before you book, in this order. Each step comes from Pitco's own guidance for Prob on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit. 01 Turn the control off and stop frying on that tank. 02 Write down when Prob first showed and whether it comes and goes, which helps find a loose connector. 03 Have the probe and its connections metered on a visit. ### Still there? It usually turns into [commercial controls and board repair](https://commercialappliancerepair.center/services/commercial-controls-and-board-repair/). Book with the code and the model number. ### What not to do Prob alone is the open probe; Prob followed by HI is the shorted probe. Neither is the same as HEAt FAIL, which is about the heat circuit rather than the temperature reading. ## What you may notice with it. The commercial appliance problems Prob tends to arrive with. Turn the control off and stop frying on that tank. If it comes back, it needs a visit. ### What is the difference between Prob and Prob HI on a Pitco? Prob means the probe circuit is open. Prob HI means it is shorted. Both stop the control from reading the oil. ### Why does Prob come and go on my Pitco? An intermittent message often points to a connector or wire that loses contact as the fryer heats and cools. The technician checks continuity along the whole run. ### Is Prob on a Pitco the probe or the control? Pitco's test order starts at the probe and its wiring. The control is considered only after those check out. --- **[Read on the site: Pitco Prob: the digital control has lost the probe signal](https://commercialappliancerepair.center/error-codes/pitco-prob/)** **[Book a visit with CommercialApplianceRepair.center](https://commercialappliancerepair.center/schedule/)**
