Vulcan's list includes the gas supply or gas valve, the igniter and its spark gap, the flame sensor, the ignition board, the control board and an open high limit. On a fryer, a griddle, a combi or a gas tumbler the ordinary reasons come first: the gas valve at the unit left partly closed after cleaning, a quick-disconnect hose not fully seated, an igniter crusted with grease or lint, a flame sensor or thermopile that no longer reads the heat, or a draft from a hood or a door pulling the pilot away.
