A commercial washer-extractor, whether a coin machine in a laundromat or a soft-mount extractor in a hotel's on-premise laundry, finishes each cycle with a high-speed spin that throws water out of the load before it goes to the tumblers. The machine only starts that spin when it is sure it is safe: the door is locked, the water has drained, and the load is balanced enough not to shake the machine off its base. So a wet load at the end is often the machine protecting itself. A single bath mat, a comforter or a pile of wet mop heads throws the drum out of balance, and the machine redistributes, tries again, and then gives up. A drum packed past its rated weight cannot tumble into balance at all. A drain valve held open or plugged by a sock or a coin stops the water from leaving, so the spin never begins. After those come the parts: a door lock that does not prove closed, a drive belt that slips or breaks, a motor or its inverter drive that stops, or the controls that read the balance.
