What E1
actually means.

The red-leaded probe sits in the evaporator coil and tells the control when defrost has done its job. With E1 showing, the control has to end defrost on time alone, so on low-temperature units frost can build up on the coil over the following days.

What to do when E1 shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Continental Refrigerator's own guidance for E1 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Keep logging food temperatures and note when E1 appeared.

02

Look for frost building on the coil behind the grille.

03

Book a visit so the red probe and its connection can be checked.

Still there?

It usually turns into commercial controls and board repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

E1 is not the probe that controls the cabinet temperature; that is the black probe, reported as E0. The cabinet may feel fine for days after E1 appears.

Where E1 usually leads

Commercial controls and board repair.

Controller, touch panel, probe or sensor, relay, contactor, power supply, door switch or interlock, tested before anything is changed · moderate.

Questions
about E1.

Can I clear E1 myself?
Keep logging food temperatures and note when E1 appeared. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Is E1 on a Continental urgent?
Less than E0, because the cabinet probe still works. Leave it too long and the coil can ice, which then warms the cabinet.
Why did E1 appear after cleaning my Continental?
A probe wire pulled or wet during cleaning can give the same error as a failed probe. The connection is the first thing checked.
Can I start a manual defrost on a Continental with E1?
The manual shows a manual defrost by holding the up and down buttons together. With E1 active the defrost ends on time, so keep an eye on it.

Still showing E1?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
