The small controller display on the front of a stainless commercial reach-in cabinet in a restaurant kitchen, the display lit with no characters readable, the reach-in's doors closed, nobody at the unit.

Delfield dEF: a defrost is running or the unit is recovering

Delfield's R290 units go straight into a defrost when they are first powered or switched back on, and the display reads dEF until that cycle ends and for up to 30 more minutes while the box cools.

What dEF
actually means.

Delfield's R290 units go straight into a defrost when they are first powered or switched back on, and the display reads dEF until that cycle ends and for up to 30 more minutes while the box cools. Low-temperature cabinets also defrost after seven hours of total compressor running, or sooner if the coil gets very cold.

What to do when dEF shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Delfield's own guidance for dEF on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Leave the unit running; do not unplug it again, since that starts another defrost.

02

Give it up to an hour after start-up before judging the temperature.

03

If dEF never clears or the cabinet warms steadily, book a visit.

Cleared?

The code is gone from the controller, the box pulls down to its set point and holds it, the vat or the cavity reaches temperature and recovers on schedule, the rinse hits its heat and the drum finishes its spin, all without a new part. If the same code comes back within a week, or during the next busy shift, mention it when you book.

What not to do

dEF is not an alarm. A display stuck on dEF for hours with a warming cabinet is a separate problem, usually a defrost part or the control.

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Nothing on the unit has broken; the controller is reporting a state it chose or one somebody set. A defrost pauses cooling for a scheduled melt and shows a warmer air reading for a while, a combi asks for a delime or runs its clean cycle and locks the door until it ends, a dish machine or a laundry machine sits in energy save between busy periods, and a door-open reminder beeps after a long delivery. No part is needed: letting the cycle finish, or the key sequence in the manual, brings the unit back.

In Delfield's own words

The display will continue to read dEF for an additional 30 minutes while the cooling cycle cools the box to the set temperature.

Questions
about dEF.

Can I clear dEF myself?
Leave the unit running; do not unplug it again, since that starts another defrost.
Why does my Delfield say dEF every time I plug it in?
The control always starts with a defrost after power-up. That is by design.
How long does a Delfield defrost last?
On the R290 low-temperature reach-ins, between six and 35 minutes depending on the frost, and the display may keep showing dEF for up to 30 minutes after.
Can I start a defrost on my Delfield by hand?
Yes. Delfield's manual says to hold the upper left button for five seconds, or to unplug the unit for a few seconds and plug it back in.

Back to your everyday

Still showing dEF?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
