What off
actually means.

Holding the lower left button for five seconds puts a Delfield control into stand-by, and the display reads off with a period. Holding it again for five seconds shows on, and the unit starts with a defrost. It is easy to trigger by accident when wiping the keypad.

What to do when off shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Delfield's own guidance for off on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Hold the lower left button for five seconds until the display reads on.

02

Expect dEF next; the unit starts every restart with a defrost.

03

Check the food, and if the display will not leave off, book a visit.

Cleared?

The code is gone from the controller, the box pulls down to its set point and holds it, the vat or the cavity reaches temperature and recovers on schedule, the rinse hits its heat and the drum finishes its spin, all without a new part. If the same code comes back within a week, or during the next busy shift, mention it when you book.

What not to do

off is not a failure; the control is doing what it was told. A blank display is different and points to power or the control itself.

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Nothing on the unit has broken; the controller is reporting a state it chose or one somebody set. A defrost pauses cooling for a scheduled melt and shows a warmer air reading for a while, a combi asks for a delime or runs its clean cycle and locks the door until it ends, a dish machine or a laundry machine sits in energy save between busy periods, and a door-open reminder beeps after a long delivery. No part is needed: letting the cycle finish, or the key sequence in the manual, brings the unit back.

Questions
about off.

Can I clear off myself?
Hold the lower left button for five seconds until the display reads on.
Why does my Delfield just say off?
The control is in stand-by, usually after the lower left button was held during cleaning. Hold it again for five seconds to restart.
Why does my Delfield show dEF after I turn it back on?
Delfield starts every restart with a defrost, so dEF right after on is normal.
Is there a separate power switch on a Delfield?
Delfield's 4400 and 4500 Series manual says those units also have a power disconnect switch behind the louvered end panel.

Back to your everyday

Still showing off?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
