A commercial condensing unit mounted on top of a walk-in cooler in a restaurant back room, its condenser fan guard and dusty coil face in view, insulated copper lines running down into the walk-in cooler's roof panel, nobody near the unit.

What CLN FIL
actually means.

Traulsen calls condenser cleaning the single most important thing an owner can do for the unit. On R & A Series controls, CLN FIL is the reminder. A dusty coil makes the compressor run longer and hotter and is behind many warm-cabinet calls.

What to do when CLN FIL shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Traulsen's own guidance for CLN FIL on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Unplug the unit before touching anything.

02

Remove the louver panel as Traulsen describes for your series, then vacuum or brush dust from the condenser fins.

03

Use compressed air only for dirt packed into the fins, and put the louver back before restoring power.

04

If CLN FIL returns soon after cleaning, or the coil is greasy, book a visit.

Still there?

It usually turns into walk-in cooler repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

CLN FIL is a maintenance reminder, not a failure. Units with the StayClear wide-fin coil still need a cleaning about every six months, per Traulsen's newer manual.

Where CLN FIL usually leads

Walk-in cooler repair.

Walk-in evaporator fan, defrost heater or drain line heater, door gasket, frame heater, expansion valve, leak repair, compressor or condensing unit · moderate to highest.

Units built after July 2025 carry the Smart Control, which keeps alarms in a menu instead (see PFA).

Questions
about CLN FIL.

Can I clear CLN FIL myself?
Unplug the unit before touching anything. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
How do I clean the condenser on a Traulsen upright?
Traulsen's guide has you disconnect power, remove the two bottom screws on the louver and pivot it up to reach the front-facing condenser. Vacuum or brush the fins, then refit the louver.
How often should a Traulsen condenser be cleaned?
Kitchens with grease or flour in the air need more frequent cleaning. Traulsen's newer manual asks for cleaning at least every six months even on StayClear coils.
Can I keep running my Traulsen with CLN FIL showing?
Yes, for a short time, but clean the coil soon. A clogged coil is one of the causes Traulsen gives for a warm food compartment.

Still showing CLN FIL?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
