What CHI
actually means.

CHI is how R & A Series controls report a warm cabinet. The control compares the cabinet air sensor with its alarm limit and shows CHI when the air stays above it. Loading warm food, a door kept open or a dirty condenser are the common causes Traulsen lists for a warm food compartment.

What to do when CHI shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Traulsen's own guidance for CHI on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Probe the food and write the reading and the time on your log.

02

Check the door gaskets for a proper seal and close any door left open.

03

Move food above 41°F to another unit and follow your health code on discard.

04

If the cabinet does not recover within a few hours, book a visit.

Still there?

It usually turns into reach-in and prep table repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

CHI is not a sensor failure; SN1 reports that. A cabinet that shows CHI only after a big warm load and then recovers is working as it should.

Where CHI usually leads

Reach-in and prep table repair.

Reach-in, pass-through or prep table gasket, hinge, fan motor, thermostat or controller, defrost heater, leak repair or compressor · moderate.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. Shown by the control on R & A Series cabinets, as listed in Traulsen's quick reference guide TR35924 (rev. C, 2015). Units built after July 2025 carry the Smart Control, which keeps alarms in a menu instead (see PFA).

Questions
about CHI.

Can I clear CHI myself?
Probe the food and write the reading and the time on your log. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
What should I do first when my Traulsen shows CHI?
Check the food with a thermometer and log it, then look at the doors. Most CHI alarms after a delivery clear once the door stays shut.
Can a dirty condenser cause CHI on a Traulsen?
Yes. Traulsen calls condenser cleaning the most important thing you can do for the unit, and a clogged coil makes the cabinet run warm.
Is CHI on a Traulsen an emergency?
It is when the food has been above 41°F. Move it to a working unit before you do anything else.

Still showing CHI?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
