What E04
actually means.

Garland's zones carry sensors that watch the pan and cook surface. When they read too hot, or the sensor itself fails, the unit switches off and shows E04, or four short flashes after each long one. Codes E17, E18, E27, E28 and E41 to E46 share this row of the chart.

What to do when E04 shows on the commercial appliance

Kind of codeTemperature and alarms

The controller has seen a temperature outside the band it was set for and is saying so: a box above its alarm point, a fryer vat or an oven cavity that tripped its high-limit, or a dish machine rinse that never came up to heat. Often the cause sits outside the unit, such as a door left open during a delivery, a coil packed with grease, a kitchen far hotter than the maker allows or a booster fed cold water. Checking the door, the coil and the air around the unit is fair; move the product if a cold box stays above 41°F, and book the visit.

Shows up asCommercial Appliance Error Code on a Combi, Fryer, Dish Machine or Laundry Display

A commercial appliance error code appears as letters or numbers on a combi, fryer, reach-in controller, dish machine or laundry machine display, or as a flashing light or an alarm tone.

MakeGarland

Garland equipment on a cooking line is usually looked at after close, when every burner is cold and the grates can come up without rushing a cook.

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Garland's own guidance for E04 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Lift the pan away and give both the pan and the zone time to cool.

02

Do not leave an empty pan on a zone at high power.

03

Clean the air filter and clear the vents, as Garland lists for this code.

04

Book a visit if E04 appears with a cool, correctly used pan, since a sensor may be defective.

It usually turns into reach-in and prep table repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

E04 is not the same as E03, which reports the electronics overheating rather than the cooking surface. On griddles and braising pans, the related E41 to E46 codes allow the unit to keep running.

Questions
about E04.

Can I clear E04 myself?
Lift the pan away and give both the pan and the zone time to cool. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why does my Garland induction show E04 when searing?
A dry pan at high power can pass the sensor limit quickly. Adding fat or food, or lowering the setting, usually prevents it.
Is E04 on a Garland a fire risk?
The unit switches off to prevent one. If oil in the pan is smoking heavily, leave it on the switched-off zone, keep water away and use the kitchen's Class K extinguisher if it ignites.
How do I know if the Garland sensor has failed?
If E04 appears with a cool pan or right at start-up, the sensor is the likely cause, and a technician needs to test it.

Still showing E04?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
