What 086
actually means.

The booster has a safety that opens if the water gets far too hot. When it trips, the LXn shows Booster overtemp tripped with 086, and no button on the screen clears it. The safety has to be reset and the reason for the overheat found.

What to do when 086 shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Hobart's own guidance for 086 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Stop using the machine and leave the door closed while it is hot.

02

Turn the machine's circuit breaker off from a dry panel.

03

Do not open panels to reach the safety; it sits beside live wiring.

04

Book a visit so the booster element, contactor and thermostat can be tested before the safety is reset.

Still there?

It usually turns into reach-in and prep table repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

086 is not the same as 001, where the booster sensor reads 239°F or more and holding the power button drains the machine. A booster that overheats has usually been heated by a part that did not switch off, so resetting the safety without a repair only repeats the trip.

Where 086 usually leads

Reach-in and prep table repair.

Reach-in, pass-through or prep table gasket, hinge, fan motor, thermostat or controller, defrost heater, leak repair or compressor · moderate.

Questions
about 086.

Can I clear 086 myself?
Stop using the machine and leave the door closed while it is hot. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Can I reset the booster safety on a Hobart myself?
No. It sits inside the machine near live wiring, and the cause of the overheat has to be found first. Book a visit.
What makes a Hobart booster overheat?
A heater contactor that stays closed or a failed control sensor are the usual reasons. Hobart has separate codes, 088 and 089, for contactors that ignore the off command.
Is there a fire risk with 086 on a Hobart?
The safety has done its job by cutting the heat. If you smell burning, keep the breaker off and keep people clear until the technician arrives.

Still showing 086?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
