What dEF
actually means.

Every True unit has to clear frost from its evaporator coil. During defrost a cooler stops the compressor and lets the fans move air over the coil, while a unit set as a freezer uses an electric heater. The display shows dEF while this happens and can keep showing it for a short time after cooling restarts.

What to do when dEF shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from True Residential's own guidance for dEF on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Leave the unit alone; the cycle ends on its own.

02

Avoid loading warm product or holding the door open until the temperature shows again.

03

If dEF stays on the display for hours, or water and ice build up in the cabinet, book a visit.

Cleared?

The code is gone from the controller, the box pulls down to its set point and holds it, the vat or the cavity reaches temperature and recovers on schedule, the rinse hits its heat and the drum finishes its spin, all without a new part. If the same code comes back within a week, or during the next busy shift, mention it when you book.

What not to do

dEF is not an alarm and needs no reset. A display that shows dEF all day, with the cabinet warming, is a different problem: a defrost part or the control is not ending the cycle.

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Nothing on the unit has broken; the controller is reporting a state it chose or one somebody set. A defrost pauses cooling for a scheduled melt and shows a warmer air reading for a while, a combi asks for a delime or runs its clean cycle and locks the door until it ends, a dish machine or a laundry machine sits in energy save between busy periods, and a door-open reminder beeps after a long delivery. No part is needed: letting the cycle finish, or the key sequence in the manual, brings the unit back.

In True Residential's own words

The temperature with a digital display (if installed) shows dEF during defrost.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. True's guide says the display shows dEF during defrost on units with a digital display; Carel controls print dF and Danfoss ERC controls print deF. Models TDC, TFM, THDC and TMW need a manual defrost instead.

Questions
about dEF.

Can I clear dEF myself?
Leave the unit alone; the cycle ends on its own.
How often does a True unit go into dEF?
The control starts defrost on a time interval and may also start it when conditions call for it. The interval is set by the control and differs by model.
Why is the temperature high while my True shows dEF?
The compressor is off while the coil clears, so the air warms a little. True notes that the temperature may take a short while to show again after defrost ends.
Do I need to press anything when a True shows dEF?
No. Defrost ends by itself; only a few True models are defrosted by hand, and their manuals say so.

Back to your everyday

Still showing dEF?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
