What Ed
actually means.

A Carel control ends defrost when the coil probe reaches its target temperature or when a maximum time runs out. Ed says the time ran out first. Once is not a worry; repeated Ed means the coil is not clearing, often because of heavy frost, a weak heater or a poor coil probe reading.

What to do when Ed shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from True Residential's own guidance for Ed on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Note how often Ed appears over a few days.

02

Look through the grille for heavy frost or ice on the coil.

03

Keep doors closed and check gaskets, since moist air getting in makes more frost.

04

If Ed shows on most defrosts or ice is building, book a visit.

Cleared?

The code is gone from the controller, the box pulls down to its set point and holds it, the vat or the cavity reaches temperature and recovers on schedule, the rinse hits its heat and the drum finishes its spin, all without a new part. If the same code comes back within a week, or during the next busy shift, mention it when you book.

What not to do

Ed is not a failure on its own and does not stop the unit. It differs from dF, which only shows that defrost is running.

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Nothing on the unit has broken; the controller is reporting a state it chose or one somebody set. A defrost pauses cooling for a scheduled melt and shows a warmer air reading for a while, a combi asks for a delime or runs its clean cycle and locks the door until it ends, a dish machine or a laundry machine sits in energy save between busy periods, and a door-open reminder beeps after a long delivery. No part is needed: letting the cycle finish, or the key sequence in the manual, brings the unit back.

Questions
about Ed.

Can I clear Ed myself?
Note how often Ed appears over a few days.
Should I worry about Ed on my True?
One Ed after a busy day with many door openings is normal. Ed on most cycles is a sign the coil is not clearing.
Why does my True show Ed and frost on the coil?
The defrost is not melting all of the ice before time runs out. The heater, the coil probe and the drain are the usual suspects.
Does Ed reset itself on a True?
Yes. It clears after a normal defrost ends on temperature.

Back to your everyday

Still showing Ed?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
