What E4
actually means.

Behind the VC5 control panel is a board that needs cooling air. When it runs above its rated limit, the display shows E4. Vulcan names a clogged rear air intake and a failed cooling fan as the likely causes.

What to do when E4 shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Vulcan's own guidance for E4 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Without moving the oven, look behind it for lint, grease or a carton pressed against the rear air intake.

02

Clear the space behind and beside the oven so it can draw cool air.

03

Check whether a broiler or fryer next to the oven blows hot air toward the controls.

04

Book a visit if E4 returns with a clear intake, since the cooling fan may have stopped.

Still there?

It usually turns into commercial controls and board repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

E4 is not a cavity temperature alarm; the oven itself may be baking normally. It is a warning about the electronics, which Vulcan notes can reduce the life of the control components.

Questions
about E4.

Can I clear E4 myself?
Without moving the oven, look behind it for lint, grease or a carton pressed against the rear air intake. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Where is the air intake on a Vulcan VC5?
At the rear of the oven. Vulcan's error table points to page 20 of the manual for keeping it clear.
Can I keep baking with E4 on my Vulcan?
Usually the oven still bakes, but every hour at high board temperature shortens its life. Clear the intake the same day.
Why did E4 start after we moved equipment on our line?
A new neighbor can push hot air or block the rear intake. Check the clearance behind the oven before booking.

Still showing E4?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
