What PROBE SHORT
actually means.

A shorted probe gives the control a reading it cannot trust. The fryer disables the heat demand, stops any timers and locks the buttons, showing PROBE SHORT; solid-state VK and TR fryers show SHORTED PROBE.

What to do when PROBE SHORT shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Vulcan's own guidance for PROBE SHORT on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Turn the fryer off and let the shortening cool.

02

Shift production to another fryer.

03

Keep water and cleaning solution away from the controls until the fryer has been checked.

04

Book a visit to test the probe, its connector and its wiring.

What not to do

PROBE SHORT is not a sign that the oil is too hot; the control simply cannot read it. It is the opposite wiring condition to PROBE OPEN, and a technician tests both the same way.

Where PROBE SHORT usually leads

Controller, touch panel, probe or sensor, relay, contactor, power supply, door switch or interlock, tested before anything is changed · moderate.

Questions
about PROBE SHORT.

Can I clear PROBE SHORT myself?
Turn the fryer off and let the shortening cool. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
What causes PROBE SHORT on a Vulcan fryer?
Damaged probe insulation, moisture at a connector or a pinched wire. Boil-out solution splashed into the control area is one way moisture gets there.
Does PROBE SHORT mean the Vulcan oil is overheating?
No. The control has lost a reliable reading and switched off the heat to stay safe.
Will turning the fryer off and on clear PROBE SHORT?
Only if the short was momentary. If it returns, the probe or its wiring needs repair.

Still showing PROBE SHORT?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
