The unit tried to light and never proved a flame, or lit and then lost it. On a fryer, a griddle, a combi or a gas tumbler the ordinary reasons come first: the gas valve at the unit left partly closed after cleaning, a quick-disconnect hose not fully seated, an igniter crusted with grease or lint, a flame sensor or thermopile that no longer reads the heat, or a draft from a hood or a door pulling the pilot away. Checking the valve and running the reset the manual names are fair; if you smell gas, get everyone out first, and the gas valve, the sensor and every fitting stay with a technician.

Turn the power switch off and wait five minutes so any gas in the burner compartment can clear.

Switch the fryer back on and let the control try to light the pilot again.

Look for a draft from a door, a fan or the hood that could be blowing the pilot out.

Book a visit if the pilot will not stay lit, and do not open any gas fittings yourself.

PILOT OUT is not the same as IGNITION LOCKOUT, which reports a gas supply that never lit the burners. It is also different from a tripped high limit, which Vulcan's chart lists separately as a cause of no heat.

Can I clear PILOT OUT myself?
Turn the power switch off and wait five minutes so any gas in the burner compartment can clear. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why does the pilot keep going out on my Vulcan QuickFry?
Drafts, a partly blocked pilot orifice and a weak flame sensor are the usual reasons. Drafts are worth ruling out first; the other two need a technician.
How long should I wait before restarting a Vulcan QuickFry?
Vulcan asks for five minutes with the power switch off before starting, so gas that collected in the burner compartment can escape.
Can I keep frying while PILOT OUT shows?
No. The burners cannot light without the pilot, so the shortening will cool below frying temperature.
