The open door of a cold stainless combi oven in a commercial kitchen, its empty racks in view and a thin core temperature probe hanging on its holder inside the cavity, nobody at the combi oven.

What E01
actually means.

The cabinet thermistor is how the control knows how cold the box is. When it fails, Steelheart and Commercial Series uprights show E01, beep once a minute and run the compressor five minutes on and five minutes off instead of stopping. Product stays cool for a while, but nothing is watching the actual temperature any more.

What to do when E01 shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Hoshizaki's own guidance for E01 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Silence the beep with the upper button and put a thermometer inside the cabinet.

02

Log the thermometer reading every hour while E01 stays on the display.

03

Move sensitive food to another cold unit if the thermometer reads above 41°F.

04

Book a visit to have the cabinet thermistor replaced.

Still there?

It usually turns into commercial controls and board repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

E01 is not a warm-cabinet alarm, and the cabinet is often still cold when it first appears. It is also a different code from E1 on older HPR prep tables, where E1 reports a high cabinet temperature.

Where E01 usually leads

Commercial controls and board repair.

Controller, touch panel, probe or sensor, relay, contactor, power supply, door switch or interlock, tested before anything is changed · moderate.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. Steelheart upright A-Series and Commercial Series upright S-Series, which fall back to timed cycling. Steelheart prep tables and equipment stands list E01 too, without the timed fallback line.

Questions
about E01.

Can I clear E01 myself?
Silence the beep with the upper button and put a thermometer inside the cabinet. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Can I keep using a Hoshizaki cabinet that shows E01?
For a short time, with a thermometer inside and a written log. Timed cycling keeps most cabinets cold, but it cannot react to a full delivery or a busy door, so book the repair rather than living with it.
Does unplugging a Hoshizaki cabinet clear E01?
Hoshizaki gives no reset for E01 other than replacing the sensor, so a power cycle is not a repair. Leave the cabinet running on its fallback and book a visit.
Is E01 the same as E02 on a Hoshizaki?
No. E01 is the cabinet sensor that decides when to cool; E02 is the defrost sensor on the coil. E01 is the one that changes how the whole cabinet runs.

Still showing E01?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
