What E17
actually means.

Behind the controller's own temperature ceiling sits a separate physical high limit. On the FQ4000 it opens at a higher temperature than E16 and removes heat no matter what the controller asks for. When it opens, the controller logs E17 and the vat stops heating; a reading this high means the normal temperature control has already been bypassed.

What to do when E17 shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Frymaster's own guidance for E17 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Leave the fryer off and let the oil cool without moving or draining it.

02

Keep the Class K extinguisher and the hood suppression pull station clear and ready until the vat has cooled well below frying heat.

03

Write down the time and what was cooking, then book a visit; the reason the oil got that hot has to be found before the switch is reset.

Still there?

It usually turns into reach-in and prep table repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

E17 is the switch that saved the vat, not the root cause, so resetting it and firing up again only repeats the overheating. It is different from E18, where the oil passed 460°F and this same switch failed to open at all.

Where E17 usually leads

Reach-in and prep table repair.

Reach-in, pass-through or prep table gasket, hinge, fan motor, thermostat or controller, defrost heater, leak repair or compressor · moderate.

Questions
about E17.

Can I clear E17 myself?
Leave the fryer off and let the oil cool without moving or draining it. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Is there a reset button for E17 on a Frymaster FilterQuick?
The switch itself sits behind the panels with the frypot wiring, and Frymaster's guidance is to shut down and get service. A technician resets it only after finding why the oil ran that hot.
Why did my Frymaster stop heating after an E17?
Because the high limit is designed to lock the heat off until someone deals with it. The vat will stay cold, which is the safe outcome.
Does E17 mean my Frymaster almost caught fire?
It means the oil reached a temperature the fryer is built never to see in normal cooking. The backup did its job, which is exactly why the primary control must be checked before the next shift.

Still showing E17?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
