The draft fan has to push enough air to close the air pressure switch before the gas valve opens. When that proof never arrives, from a fan that has stopped, a blocked flue or a switch stuck open, the control shows E-20B.

The unit tried to light and never proved a flame, or lit and then lost it. On a fryer, a griddle, a combi or a gas tumbler the ordinary reasons come first: the gas valve at the unit left partly closed after cleaning, a quick-disconnect hose not fully seated, an igniter crusted with grease or lint, a flame sensor or thermopile that no longer reads the heat, or a draft from a hood or a door pulling the pilot away.
