What E-5
actually means.

The control compares its oil probe reading with the setpoint and raises E-5 when the shortening climbs too high. Henny Penny sends the check to the heating circuits and the temperature probe, because heat that does not switch off or a probe that reads low are the usual reasons.

What to do when E-5 shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Henny Penny's own guidance for E-5 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Press any button to silence the alarm and switch the fryer off; keep the lid closed and do not vent or open it under pressure.

02

Keep staff clear and have the Class K extinguisher and hood suppression ready as trained, in case smoke builds.

03

Once the oil has cooled, switch on again; if E-5 shows a second time, leave the fryer off and book a visit.

It usually turns into reach-in and prep table repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

E-5 is a reading from the operating probe, not the separate high-limit safety, which shows E-10 when it trips. A probe that has failed open or shorted shows E-6A or E-6B rather than E-5.

Questions
about E-5.

Can I clear E-5 myself?
Press any button to silence the alarm and switch the fryer off; keep the lid closed and do not vent or open it under pressure. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
What should staff do first when a Henny Penny shows E-5?
Stop cooking, silence the alarm and turn the fryer off. Hot shortening is a fire risk, so nobody should add product or open the lid under pressure while it cools.
Is E-5 on a Henny Penny caused by old oil?
Worn shortening smokes at a lower temperature but does not by itself make the control read too hot. The manual points to the heating circuit and probe, which is where a technician starts.
If E-5 clears after a restart, is the fryer fixed?
Not necessarily. A heating contactor or probe that sticks once will usually do it again, so log the time and book a visit if it repeats.

Still showing E-5?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
