What E-4
actually means.

On the PFE and PFG pressure fryers, E-4 is raised by the control electronics when the board behind the panel gets too hot. Henny Penny links it to blocked side louvers and, on units that have one, a cooling fan that has stopped moving air.

What to do when E-4 shows on the commercial appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Henny Penny's own guidance for E-4 on its commercial appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Press any button to silence the alarm, then switch the fryer off and back on as the manual directs.

02

Clear boxes, towels and grease buildup away from the louvers on both sides of the cabinet.

03

Note whether the kitchen is unusually hot around the fryer, such as a charbroiler next to it with its heat shield missing.

04

If E-4 returns once the louvers are clear, book a visit so the board cooling fan and the control can be checked.

What not to do

E-4 is not an oil temperature reading; hot shortening shows as E-5 instead. It also does not mean the high limit has opened, which is E-10.

Questions
about E-4.

Can I clear E-4 myself?
Press any button to silence the alarm, then switch the fryer off and back on as the manual directs. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why does my Henny Penny pressure fryer show E-4 in the middle of a lunch rush?
A board that sits beside a hot fryer vat depends on air flowing through the side louvers. During a rush the line is at its hottest, so a partly blocked louver or a tired fan often shows up first at that time.
Can I keep frying while a Henny Penny shows E-4?
Treat it as a stop. Silence the alarm, power the fryer down and back up, and clear the louvers; if the code comes straight back, the electronics are at risk and the fryer should wait for a technician.
Does E-4 on a Henny Penny mean the board needs replacing?
Not by itself. Henny Penny first points to airflow around the board, and only a repeat after the louvers and fan are cleared suggests a board or fan part.

Still showing E-4?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code as shown, the model and serial from the data plate, and a word on whether the unit still holds temperature, heats, rinses or spins. With those three, the office can match the likely part to your unit the same day.
