A row of three stainless steel reach-in cabinets with solid doors along the wall of a working restaurant kitchen, the reach-ins clearly the subject, one door open showing sheet pans of prepped vegetables on wire shelves, a walk-in cooler door with a clear strip curtain visible at the far end, a cook seen only from behind in a white jacket passing in the soft background, bright even kitchen light.

Turbo Air commercial appliances,
specifically.

Turbo Air sells more than 500 refrigeration models, from reach-ins, prep and pizza tables, undercounters, worktops and chef bases to merchandisers, display cases and underbar units, plus M3 and PRO Series heated cabinets. Two design choices shape most Turbo Air visits: a motorized self-cleaning condenser on many models, and natural refrigerant across the cold line.

The Turbo Air lineup

What is particular
to Turbo Air.

We work on Turbo Air M3, J Series, E Line, Super Deluxe and PRO Series reach-ins, M3 and PRO heated cabinets, sandwich, salad, mega top and pizza prep tables, undercounters, worktops, chef bases, glass door merchandisers and display cases. Turbo Air ice machines go to our ice machine service.

A brush that sweeps the condenser

Many Turbo Air units have a patented self-cleaning condenser: a small motor drives a brush over the coil on a schedule, every three days by default. If the brush does not reach its switch in time, the control records S1 or S2.

Codes kept behind a menu

Turbo Air controls show the temperature on the face and keep their error codes in a service menu opened by holding both temperature buttons. We read that menu before anything else on arrival.

Natural refrigerant throughout

Turbo Air says all its refrigerators use natural refrigerant, and its hydrocarbon models run on R-290 or R-600a. Sealed-system work on those is done with flammable-refrigerant precautions.

A check that the compressor is cooling

The control watches the evaporator after the compressor starts; if the coil is still above 32 degrees after 30 minutes, it records C1. That code separates a cooling problem from a sensor problem quickly.

Parts

Turbo Air posts installation and service manuals with parts lists for each series in its online resource center. Evaporator sensors are color coded, white, orange and blue, which helps a technician replace the right one.

Repair or replace

A Turbo Air with a sound cabinet is worth repairing when a sensor, fan motor, condenser brush motor or control board fails. When the compressor fails on an older unit, we set the repair against a new cabinet before any sealed-system work.

Questions about
Turbo Air commercial appliances.

How do I see the error code on a Turbo Air?
Hold both temperature buttons until SL shows, then step through the menu to the error code item. If you are not comfortable in the menu, tell us what the display shows and we read it on site.
Does a Turbo Air self-cleaning condenser ever need cleaning?
Turbo Air still recommends blowing the coil out with nitrogen once or twice a year, and notes the brush may not remove grease.
Does my Turbo Air use a flammable refrigerant?
Its hydrocarbon models use R-290 (propane) or R-600a (isobutane), which are flammable. If you ever smell gas or hear a hiss, clear the area and keep flames and switches away.
Why does my Turbo Air cabinet run warm with the display normal?
The display can look fine while the evaporator struggles. A C1 in the error menu confirms the coil did not cool after 30 minutes of compressor running.
