A clean modern laundromat with a long row of stainless front-load commercial laundry machines with round glass doors, a row of large stacked tumblers along the opposite wall, one machine door open, the laundry machines clearly the subject, a customer seen only from behind folding towels on a counter in the soft background, bright daylight through a storefront window.

A Dexter call in a laundromat is often set for opening time, before customers load the row and every pocket of the room is in use.

Dexter commercial appliances,
specifically.

Dexter Laundry, an employee-owned maker in Fairfield, Iowa, builds washers and tumblers for vended laundromats and for on-premises laundries in hotels, nursing homes, stadiums and correctional centers. We repair both the coin-operated T-Series machines and the on-premises units with O-Series or 6-Cycle controls.

What is particular
to Dexter.

We service Dexter T-Series vended front-loads, Express machines, stack and single tumblers, and on-premises washers and tumblers with O-Series or 6-Cycle controls. Stores connected to DexterLive can share machine history before the visit.

Read the drive light first

Dexter front-loads run on a variable frequency drive that keeps its own status code. Dexter's troubleshooting guide asks for that code to be read before power is removed, and for power to stay off three minutes before a restart.

Same number, two meanings

On a Dexter front-load F1 is a door lock error and F2 a slow fill; on a Dexter tumbler the same F1 and F2 point to the temperature sensor. We always ask which machine is showing the code.

O-Series tumblers sense dryness

Dexter's O-Series Moisture Detection System uses a sensor strip on the tumbler that reports wirelessly to the control and ends the cycle at the chosen dryness. A load that keeps drying past done points us at that system.

Built-in fire response

Every O-Series tumbler has a Level 1 fire response that sounds an alarm and keeps tumbling if temperature rises unexpectedly; models with water hookups can also spray or dowse the load. After any such event we inspect the tumbler before it runs again.

Parts

Drive units, door lock motors, pressure switches and temperature probes are matched to the model and serial number. Dexter asks for a soft reset after a drive or valve board is swapped, which we do before handing the machine back.

Repair or replace

Dexter builds its washers to survive long out-of-balance testing, so a machine with a sound drum and bearings is usually worth repairing when a drive, lock or sensor fails. When the drive and bearings both need replacement on an older machine, compare it with the store's refit plans.

Questions about
Dexter commercial appliances.

Why does Dexter say to check the drive code before powering down?
The motor drive holds its own status code that is lost when power is cut. Writing it down tells the technician whether the drive was involved.
How long should a Dexter stay off before restarting?
Dexter says three minutes, so the drive can reset. Restarting sooner can bring up F13 or F21.
Does F1 mean the same thing on every Dexter?
No. On a front-load F1 is a door lock error; on a tumbler it can mean a shorted temperature sensor.
What happens when a Dexter O-Series tumbler senses a fire?
It sounds an alarm and keeps tumbling to smother the fire; models with water hookups can also spray or dowse the load. Call 911 and keep the door shut.
