A working restaurant cooking line under a stainless ventilation hood, two stainless gas fryers with baskets hanging above the oil, a flat griddle and a combi oven with a glass door beside them, the equipment clearly the subject, a cook seen only from behind and shoulders down at the far end of the line, warm kitchen light, small blue flames visible under the griddle.

Star commercial appliances,
specifically.

Star Manufacturing builds countertop cooking equipment in Tennessee: griddles, charbroilers, hot plates, fryers, waffle bakers, sandwich grills, hot dog equipment, and the Star Holman line of conveyor toasters and conveyor ovens. It shows up most in quick-service kitchens, convenience stores and concession stands, where one small unit carries a whole menu item.

What is particular
to Star.

We work on Star-Max and Ultra-Max griddles, charbroilers and hot plates, Star fryers, Star Holman conveyor and contact toasters, conveyor ovens, sandwich grills, waffle bakers and hot dog equipment. Gas and electric models share cabinets but have different heat controls.

Control type is in the model number

Star-Max gas griddles end in a code for their control: MF manual, TF thermostat, TSPF thermostat with safety pilot, TCHSF the same with a chrome plate. Knowing the letters tells us whether a cold section is a burner valve, a thermostat or a pilot safety before we arrive.

Standing pilots need patience

On safety-pilot griddles the knob has to be held in for up to a minute while the pilot heats its safety. A pilot that will not hold after that is the safety or the pilot flame, not the user.

Words on the display, not codes

Star's digital units, such as Holman conveyor toasters and rolling tortilla warmers, speak in words like PREHT, COOL DOWN and LOW TEMP. Most of those are normal modes, so we read them with staff before treating them as a problem.

Conveyor parts wear

Conveyor toasters and ovens have belts, drive motors and elements that wear with hours of use. A slow or uneven toast is often a stretched belt or a weak element rather than the control.

Parts

Thermostats, safety valves, pilots, elements and conveyor belts are matched to the model and control suffix on the data plate. Star lists many of the same part numbers across sizes, which often keeps common parts easy to get.

Repair or replace

Most Star countertop units are simple enough that a failed thermostat, pilot safety or element is worth replacing. When a griddle plate is warped or a conveyor frame is worn out, a new unit is often the better buy.

Questions about
Star commercial appliances.

Why does my Star griddle pilot go out when I let go of the knob?
The safety needs the pilot to heat it first. Star says to hold the knob in for about 60 seconds; if it still goes out, the pilot or safety needs service.
What do the letters after a Star griddle model mean?
They name the control: MF is manual, TF thermostat, TSPF thermostat with safety pilot, and TCHSF adds a chrome plate. The suffix tells a technician which parts to bring.
Why does the Star conveyor toaster keep running after I turn it off?
It is cooling down. The fan and conveyor run for five minutes with COOL and DOWN on the display, then it shows OFF.
Do you repair Star hot dog rollers and tortilla warmers?
Yes. They use heaters, motors and simple controls like the rest of the line, and we service them on the same visit.
